LIVE THEATRE: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
Wednesday, July 15, 2009
Little Shop of Horrors Musical Theatre West
I almost didn't see this play. Not because I wasn't interested, but because it was supposed to be "Dreamgirls" instead of "Little Shop of Horrors"! For some reason, the performance rights for the former didn't come through and required them to stage the latter.
For those not familiar with the show it's a musical comedy about a nerdy florist who raises an exitoc plant that turns out to enjoy dining on human flesh. As much as they tried to notify the audience - some members sure were surprised to see a flower eating people instead of a Motown backstory of the Supremes! It ended up just fine with us anyway because they used the original Broadway set and the massive flower designed for it.
We loved the production, and here I am forced to once again state how much I am enamored of the regional theatre available here in Los Angeles.
It's Broadway players in between their bigger gigs. In speaking with one of the players after the show, I was interested to hear that for the performers they like doing shorter runs as a kind of vacation from the year-long Broadway runs of one show, which they are doing in their sleep after about 6 weeks in.
You must get out to see this comedy-fantasy and partake of the fine players at affordable rates.
