| Topol's Farewell Tour, Minus a Few Goodbyes |
This production of Fiddler on the Roof is being billed as "the farewell tour" of the Israeli actor Topol, who is most famous for his motion picture portrayal of the lead character, Tavye. As you can imagine, the anticipation was incredibly high. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that when it was calmly announced that the role of Tavye would be played by the understudy, the pandemonium that ensued was akin to the news reports out of Tehran with teeming crowds chanting "Death to the Dictator". People were there for the historical opportunity to see this actor and for the cache of having seen him. It's not like this was new material for our audience. In fact, if the entire cast had come down suddenly with H1N1, our audience would have simply gotten up and staged it cold themselves. In the end, the show did go on and they sang "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" and "Sunrise, Sunset" and all was well at last when the audience rose and gave a standing ovation at the curtain.
