Lyft and Waymo to Collaborate on Self-driving Cars
Self-Driving Cars

In a move that could spell trouble for Uber, Waymo, the self-driving car company that operates under Google’s parent company, announced that it is partnering with ride-sharing company Lyft to bring autonomous cars into the mainstream.

Lyft is Uber’s largest rival in the United States and the second-biggest ride-sharing service in the country.

In a statement Waymo said, “We’re looking forward to working with Lyft to explore new self-driving products that will make our roads safer and transportation more accessible. Lyft’s vision and commitment to improving the way cities move will help Waymo’s self-driving technology reach more people, in more places.”

A Lyft spokesperson said in a statement. “Waymo holds today’s best self-driving technology, and collaborating with them will accelerate our shared vision of improving lives with the world’s best transportation.”

No details were released about what the partnership will look like, but sources told the New York Times that the companies will work together on various developmental projects.

Lyft founder John Zimmer has stated previously that he expects that the majority of his company’s rides will take place in autonomous cars by 2021.

Waymo is currently in the midst of a legal battle with Uber. They allege that the ride-sharing company and a former Google executive stole trade secrets to develop its own self-driving technology. The judge in the case recently denied Uber's request that the case be settled in arbitration and recommended to federal prosecutors the allegations be investigated as a criminal matter. Uber has denied wrongdoing and said it plans to defend itself in court.
