More About Nate Borland

Nate Borland is an Iowa native who grew up in Urbandale.

Nate has always looked out for those without a voice. Shortly after graduating high school, Nate joined a veterinary disaster response team (known as a VMAT) with the National Disaster Medical System, an organization under the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He was twice deployed to Biloxi and New Orleans in response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and still cherishes the opportunity to help those in need.

Nate has always been an advocate for individual rights, though he had no clue about the law—or even the slightest thought of being a lawyer—before completing his bachelor’s degree in Public Administration at Upper Iowa University’s campus in West Des Moines. He developed a passion for individual rights, especially the First Amendment, through hours of talks with his father, who was a television news photojournalist in Des Moines for more than three decades.

Nate earned his law degree from Drake University Law School with high honors and completed certificates in Health Law and Litigation and Dispute Resolution. Nate relies on his diverse background, which also includes stints with one of Des Moines’ largest defense firms and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa, in aggressively investigating and pursuing employment and civil rights cases. Nate has a special interest in cases where he has the opportunity to demand accountability from local, state, or federal governments, or to protect the rights of public employees.
