Sam is a lifelong resident of Louisville, Kentucky and grew up in and around the law.
He is a graduate of Saint Xavier High School and the University of Louisville Equine Industry Program, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He is also a graduate of the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law. Sam is the son of Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk David L. Nicholson and nephew of retired Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge James “Jimmy” C. Nicholson, and grandson of the late Jefferson County Circuit Judge S. Rush Nicholson who, in July of 1970, famously directed a jury to return a verdict of not guilty in the criminal trial the Louisville “Black Six.”
In addition, his sister, Sara Nicholson, is a sitting District Court Judge in Jefferson County. Sam is a member of the Kentucky Bar Association and admitted to practice law in the state of Kentucky, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.
