In my opinion, a lot of what makes me different from many other lawyers is my unique background and perspectives. As a first-generation American, born in Ithaca, New York but raised on the Caribbean island of St. Croix (the same island on which one of this nation’s greatest founding fathers Alexander Hamilton was raised) I had some amazing experiences growing up in a diverse and vibrant community. It really informed many aspects of my thinking and outlook on life and career. And having parents that were educators made a big difference.
My father received a Ph.D. in genetics from Cornell University and my mother received a master’s degree in early childhood education. Both of my parents, immigrants from India and life-long educators, instilled in me the importance of education and learning. They taught me that “education” doesn’t just occur in the classroom nor does it end there. Instead, it’s a life-long commitment to improving one’s skills and knowledge. Education happens every day and the measure of a person’s knowledge is not defined or limited by how many degrees they have after their name. I know this to be true because some of the most intelligent people I’ve ever met in my life have lacked a formal education or fancy degrees. But they’ve all shared inquisitive minds and a bottomless thirst for learning. This dedication to constant learning is a big part of the culture of my law firm. For this reason, I ensure that our attorneys and staff are constantly learning about the latest developments in the law and honing our skills to give our clients the best possible representation. In my opinion, if you’re not constantly “learning,” you’re not growing.
Learning is not just limited to the law and formalized topics. It’s also about being emotionally aware of our common humanity and connection to the community. I learned from an early age, because my parents constantly drummed it into me, that irrespective of a person’s background, all people are basically the same and share the desire to be treated with dignity and respect and that they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. In this law firm, treating our clients with dignity and respect means getting to understand our clients, the pain they’re going through and helping lead them to a path of recovery.
I believe my unique life experiences, and equally unique professional background, help deliver excellent results for my clients. On the subject of professional experiences, following graduation from law school, I began my legal career with the United States Department of Justice (“Main Justice”) in Washington, D.C. litigating complex civil cases in both federal trial and appellate courts. This experience of being a lawyer in my 20s and starting my legal career by working on huge cases in Washington, D.C. taught me how to handle stress and high-stakes litigation. Later, I left Main Justice and walked over a couple of blocks to join the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia as an Assistant United States Attorney where I continued handling complex and high-profile cases in the Nation’s capital. Tiring of east coast winters, I moved to Las Vegas in 2004 to keep serving as an Assistant United States Attorney representing the United States in federal court. But after many years in the federal government and possessed by a strong desire to help individuals and businesses, I later started my own law firm capitalizing on my many years of experience involving high stakes litigation. Looking back on all of this professional experience, I believe it’s given me a unique advantage compared to the typical personal injury lawyer. Today, I use all of this experience to the benefit of my clients.
Finally, although I grew up on an island, I’ve learned in my life that no person or business should figuratively be “an island” unto themselves. What this means is that we’re all part of something bigger than our individual identities. Collectively, we’re part of a community. If the “coronavirus” pandemic of 2020 validated anything in my mind, it’s that we’re in this life together. For this reason, a big part of my law firm has always been, and will always continue to be, about giving back to our community. Whether supporting veterans, schools, first responders, victims of terrorism, legal aid or community organizations, at this law firm we recognize and respect that we’re a vital part of the larger mosaic that makes us the incredible community that we are. Simply put, I believe its our obligation to give back to those less fortunate and make a difference. That is what we strive to do each and every day.
