Barry G. Porter is a graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai`i. Mr. Porter began his legal career in 1994 by serving as a law clerk for a Circuit Court judge in Honolulu. After working in the court, Mr. Porter focused his legal career on criminal defense and constitutional law.
Mr. Porter worked as a criminal defense attorney for seven years in Honolulu, Hawai`i, until he was asked to head the Maui Public Defender's Office in 2000. While in Hawai`i Mr. Porter successfully litigated over 50 criminal jury trials and hundreds of motions asserting his client's constitutional rights. He obtained full acquittals for his clients in murder trials and dozens of other serious felony charges.
In 2004, Mr. Porter relocated to New Mexico and joined the felony division of the New Mexico Public Defender office. His jury trial successes in New Mexico include jury verdict wins in aggravated batteries, homicides, and numerous drug trafficking and sexual assault cases.
In 2010, Mr. Porter became the Training Director for the New Mexico Public Defender and was responsible for the legal and trial skills training of over 200 attorneys in New Mexico. Mr. Porter conducted over 100 training sessions for lawyers on New Mexico law and enforcing the New Mexico constitution.
In 2015, Mr. Porter along with Susan Burgess Farrell, opened Burgess and Porter Law, LLC. The guiding philosophy of Burgess and Porter Law is to provide assertive legal representation of the highest quality in order to bring forth a winning result for every client.
