Allan R. Pearlman’s first job out of law school was a judicial clerkship for the judges of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where he wrote bench memos describing relevant facts and law and recommending an outcome to the panel of appellate judges hearing the appeal or a motion on the appeal. After a year, he then went literally across the street to work as a Court Attorney for the New York Supreme Court, New York’s trial court of general jurisdiction. 

He researched and wrote proposed decisions on trial motions for the Justices of that court. After two years of this he went into private practice working at a civil litigation boutique firm, working on everything from workplace discrimination complaints to medical malpractice cases. After five years he went out on his own, and in the early 2000s he started working on tax problem resolution cases. This has become the focus of his practice. He is chair of the Committee on Taxation at New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA). 

He has organized, moderated and presented for continuing legal education courses including Tax Controversy 101, for which he wrote materials, “IRS Controversies 101: Collection Issues – the view from 3,000 feet, as well as down in the weeds,” and another continuing legal education class, Representing Clients in State and Local Criminal Tax Investigations: What Every Attorney Needs to Know. He is also a member of the American Society of Tax Problem Solvers (ASTPS) which helps him keep up with developments in the tax controversy/tax problem resolution universe.
