I run a boutique niche law practice focused on helping employees and small businesses. I have actively practiced employment and labor law for over two decades. It's all I do because it's what I like doing and do best. I don't charge for a brief initial phone conference. It helps determine whether an employee or small business really needs me or someone else or whether they sound like they know more and will do it themselves regardless. We can tell from a brief phone conference.
In-person conferences are billed depending on the matter, and fees are never a secret—ask. I generally want to know a little about the employee or small business. Is the goal to leave and move on, to leave and retire, or to embark on a completely different path? That helps determine how we might address the issue that needs resolution. We are generally not trying to get you fired.
Nor is our goal to advise businesses to fire employees. We need accurate facts before considering any options. Call some employment lawyers. Listen to how your discussion goes. Do you feel comfortable? Does the employment lawyer feel comfortable speaking or dealing with you? An employment law dispute could last years. You want to be sure you choose wisely.
It's not like getting married, but it could be a long road ahead if your issue includes fuzzy facts. The last thing you need is to be stuck with counsel you wish you never chose. Some of us are reluctant to substitute for prior lawyers. We may disagree with their strategy. And fixing a plan that didn't work may be more challenging than doing it differently from the start. So call around. Choose wisely, and good luck.
